NGC & IC
Also called: New General Catalogue, Index Catalogue, NGC, IC, OpenNGC.
The New General Catalogue (1888) and its Index Catalogues: the standard numbers for about 13,000 galaxies, clusters and nebulae.
John Dreyer compiled the NGC in 1888 from the Herschels' and others' discoveries — 7,840 objects — and added 5,386 more in two Index Catalogues. Most deep-sky objects are still known by these numbers: NGC 7000 is the North America Nebula, IC 434 the glow behind the Horsehead.
