# Conjunction

Also called: close approach, appulse.

When two sky objects — planets, the Moon, bright stars — appear close together.

A conjunction is a line-of-sight effect: the objects are millions of kilometres apart, but from Earth they appear side by side. The Moon passing a bright planet, or two planets within a degree, make beautiful sights for the naked eye, binoculars and low-power telescopes.

**In AstroPilot:** Tonight's “Coming up” lists conjunctions visible from your location.
